The writing is generally at an adult level, and there are challenging words.

The first few paragraphs include the words privation, reconciled, and cantankerous. The book begins with a brief overview of Degas, then proceeds to focus on 12 of his paintings, devoting a page or two to pointing out specific aspects of the painting. It reminded me a little of the detailed descriptions you might find in a gallery exhibit. Impressionism is one of my favorite styles of art, and I love how Degas tried to capture everyday life in so many of his paintings.

I enjoyed getting some insight into his process, and learning how he not only often composed his paintings in a studio by drawing from multiple sketches, but that he did deep research.

For his painting of a laundress, he actually went to a laundry and spent a great deal of time studying the women as they worked in order to effectively capture them. For younger readers, it might be better to read with an adult rather than solo unless the child is a very advanced reader who likes a challenge and art.
