The report that I read did not try changing the oil frequently while leaving the filter in, nor did the part I read offer a reason for the elevated wear. Of course, you can't go too far on the oil or the wear metals would increase again.
Oil gets dirty pretty quickly. You may not see the wear particles as they are microscopic, but they are suspended in the oil.
In fact, a lot of the "black stuff" you see as oil gets old is just oxidation of the additives from heat. It is well known that a dirty air filter will filter better than a new one, up to the point that the filter becomes too loaded with dirt and starts to restrict airflow. I'll try to Google something that quotes the report I read. I couldn't find the original paper, but I did get this figure out of SAE , which focuses more on extended drain intervals but does show the trend I was talking about.
